Our village shop opened on 8th March 2014 in the old Victorian primary school and is a volunteer-run enterprise. We offer teas and coffees in return for a donation, and there is free wifi too. Come in and see us!

COVID-19  An Update From Your Village Shop Committee

After a long debate, and with the imperative to continue to ensure a safe system for both volunteers and shoppers, we concluded that with perhaps an increased risk of infection to everyone currently, we should continue with our system of safe distancing, and only two shoppers at a time.

Meanwhile, we must stress the need for shoppers to respect the 2 metre guidelines, especially when doing the card transaction, and picking up your purchases, and have increased signage to remind all of this essential component.  For those who forget, we will be gently reminding you!

Please feed back any concerns you may have, and a huge thank you to all for your support of our shop!

Stay Safe Everyone!

Our Normal and Covid-19 Shop Opening Hours

Hopefully we can return to normal opening house once the government restrictions have been lifted.

We provide Kingsdon villagers (and visitors) with shopping essentials and a place to meet. We have recently undertaken a refurbishment and are now sited in the main schoolroom. This will allow us to expand the range of goods and services we can offer.

Take a look around.  We now offer a wide range of groceries, essential household goods, beers, ciders, wine soft drinks and locally sourced bread, cakes, meat, eggs, milk and cheese and much more. Newspapers can be supplied by order.

We are also the home of the Kingsdon Knitting Club and hold:

  • Social meetings
  • Monthly cream tea or toasted teacake events in the summer
  • Pimms Saturdays

Children are welcome to use the basketball net (ball available) and we encourage use of the outside space for its original purpose as a playground. If parking your car please give priority to children.

Car park is for working volunteers, customers & deliveries - all other parking is by prior arrangement with the Shop Manager or committee"

The shop building is leased from Somerset County Council, presently for a peppercorn rent. We would like to thank the following for their financial support for the refurbishment in the last year: The Plunkett Foundation, South Somerset District Council, Somerset County Council, the Kingsdon Jubilee Fund (and the many individuals who have supported their fundraising),  artists who donated a share of proceeds and the Kool Katz rock and roll band.  We would also like to thank individuals who bought shares or who donated items we would otherwise have to have paid for - and everyone who worked for free!

In previous years we have also benefited from a grant from a large local employer, a donation from Cooperative Bank and a grant from Locality (Social Investment Business). Kingsdon Parish Council match-funded a small grant from SSDC in 2014 which together with a grant from Somerset Community Foundation (Perry's recycling) helped to get us off the ground.

We are an Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community (a mutual) so we are run by our Members.
